Kaori Someya, an artist specializing in traditional Japanese painting, creates a unique world by utilizing the distinct properties of mineral pigments, metal-based colors, and plant dyes—elements that coexist in harmony without blending. Her works embody the duality of Japan’s temporal axis: “Hare” (extraordinary) and “Ke” (ordinary), where intricate decorative patterns intertwine with real-world motifs.
Within this world, her characters wander between fantasy and reality, truth and illusion, sincerity and pretense—symbolizing the choices we face in our daily lives. There are no definitive answers, only the beauty of diverse elements respecting and balancing one another. Experience Kaori Someya’s art, where tradition and modernity converge to offer a fresh perspective.

To commemorate the 140th anniversary of Yumeji Takehisa's birth, the Yumeji Art Museum will hold the woodblock print exhibition “LIFE with YUMEJI,” featuring a variety of hand-printed woodblock prints created from the blocks owned and managed by the museum, from Saturday, August 24, to Sunday, December 8.
This exhibition will be held concurrently with the Okayama exhibition of the commemorative touring exhibition "140th Anniversary YUMEJI Exhibition: Taisho Romance and a New World," which showcases the museum’s collection across Japan (Yumeji Art Museum Main Building, Yumeji Birthplace Memorial Hall, and Seinen Sanso).
The exhibition will feature woodblock prints recreated by the Kyoto Woodblock Print Institute using traditional hand-printing techniques from carefully selected works in the Yumeji Art Museum's collection, as well as prints recreated by the Kato Woodblock Research Institute, including scores, magazines, and illustrations designed by Yumeji. Among the 56 works on display will be the "Yumeji’s Cats" series, which was created as woodblock prints for Yumeji’s miniature book Cats.
The exhibition is designed by the creative platform "Sandwich," which also designed for Le Metté Adeline, and will offer a spatially resonant experience.
The woodblock print exhibition "LIFE with YUMEJI," created with the desire to "bring Yumeji's works into your daily life," can be enjoyed alongside the "YUMEJI POP-UP MUSEUM" also held at Mori no Machi Grace.
Organizer: Ryobi Foundation for the Promotion of Culture, Yumeji Art Museum.
